The First Formal

School of Nepal

Durbar High School which translates to Palace High School, opened in 1854 is the oldest modern school in Nepal.

The Historic School

Durbar High School also known as Bhanu Secondary School was established during the Rana regime.

Established in 1854, it is the first formal school of Nepal. Located right in front of Ranipokhari, Kathmandu, previously it taught only members of the ruling family, but was opened to private citizens in 1902.

Durbar High School started its educational journey by providing light of life from a small room in Thapathali Durbar with some of the students from ruling families of Rana’s Society and an Englishman called Kenning as its first teacher.

Some parts of the school were destroyed in the April 2015 Nepal earthquake. The school was rebuilt under the Chinese Aid and is now reopened.
